So whether you’re a diehard fan or just looking to pick up a new hobby, grab a seat and get ready to learn all about basketball!
The Basics of Basketball – How It’s Played and What You Need to Know
Basketball is a sport enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. If you’re new to the game, or just want to brush up on the basics, this guide will teach you the essentials of how to play basketball.
The aim of the game is to score points by shooting the ball through the hoop, or basket, which is suspended at either end of the court. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Players can score points by shooting the ball through the basket from anywhere on the court, while the opposing players try to stop the other team from scoring.
Players can also score points by making free throws, which are shots that are taken from inside a marked area called the free throw line. Free throws are awarded to a player who has been fouled while shooting, or who has been obstructed in some other way while attempting to shoot.
The basic rules of basketball are simple, but there are many more specific rules that govern things like fouls, time-keeping, and substitutions. If you want to learn more about these rules, you can read our guide to basketball rules and regulations.
Basketball is typically played in two halves, with each half lasting 20 minutes. There is also a shorter period of extra time called overtime that may be played if the scores are tied at full-time.
The number of players on each team varies depending on which level of basketball you’re playing (for example, five players per team is standard in NBA games), but generally speaking, each team will have between five and seven players.
Dribbling the Basketball
Dribbling is the act of bouncing the ball continuously with one hand and is a requirement for a player to take steps with the ball. To dribble, a player pushes the ball down into the ground just hard enough so that it bounces up no more than once on its way back to them.
They then catch the ball and repeat the process. The proper dribbling technique involves using fingers, not palms, to control the ball. The fingertip method ensures maximum control and improved shooting accuracy (since shooters typically dribble before they shoot).
There are various rules that govern how a player can legally dribble:
-You cannot double dribble, which is when you stop dribbling and then start again.
-You cannot carry the ball, which is when you roll it up your arm or hold it in your palm without dribbling.
-You cannot push the ball with your open hand or move your non-dribbling arm in a way that impedes your defender’s attempt to steal the ball.
Shooting the Basketball
There are two main ways to score in basketball: shooting the ball through the hoop, and making free throws.
To shoot the ball, a player needs to take a jump shot or a layup. A jump shot is when the player takes off from the ground and shoots the ball while in mid-air. A layup is when the player takes a shot while running toward the hoop, and then lays the ball up into the hoop.
Players can also score by making free throws. Free throws are given to a player when they are fouled while shooting, or when they are fouled while not shooting but are in possession of the ball. To make a free throw, the player stands at the free throw line and shoots the ball through the hoop.
Free Throws
A free throw is a shot that a player gets to take without anyone guarding them. This is given to the shooting player after they have been fouled while shooting by the defending team. The player gets to take their shot from the free throw line, which is 15 feet away from the basket.
If the player makes their shot, they are awarded one point. If they miss the shot, no points are given. The number of free throws that a player is awarded depends on whether it is during the regulation time or during overtime.
During regulation time, if a player is fouled while shooting a two-point shot, they are awarded two free throws. If they are fouled while shooting a three-point shot, they are awarded three free throws.
During overtime, each team is only given two free throws per foul.
The Different Types of Basketball – from Streetball to The Nba
Basketball is a sport that is enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities all over the world. There are many different types of basketball, from the fast-paced streetball played in inner-city parks, to the more formal NBA style of play.
streetball: This is a form of basketball that is played on outdoor courts, usually in urban areas. Streetball is often seen as a more informal type of basketball, with players using creative techniques to score baskets.
NBA: The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the world’s premier professional basketball league. NBA players are some of the best athletes in the world, and the level of skill and competition in the league is extremely high.
College basketball: College basketball is played at universities and colleges around the USA. It is a formal type of basketball, with strict rules and regulations. College teams are often very strong, and many players go on to have successful careers in the NBA.
FIBA: FIBA is the International Basketball Federation, and governs international competitions such as the Olympic Games and World Championships.
Basketball Rules and Regulations
Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players each. The objective is to score points by shooting a ball through a hoop 10 feet (3.048 meters) above the ground.
Players advance the ball up the court by bouncing it or passing it to a teammate, and they score points by shooting the ball through the opponent’s basket. A player may shoot at any time while touching or holding the ball, provided he does not take more than one step before shooting.
When a player stops dribbling, he must either pass the ball or shoot. Fouls, such as those involving undue roughness or illegal charging, result in free throws being awarded to the opposing team. The team scoring the most points within a specified period wins the game.
There are three main ways to score in basketball:
A basket or field goal, worth two points is awarded when a player shoots the ball through his opponents’ hoop from inside the three-point line, which runs around the edge of the court near each end;
A free throw, worth one point, is awarded when a player is fouled while shooting and his shot does not go in. He then shoots unopposed from behind a line 15 feet (4.57 meters) from the basket; and
A three-point shot, worth three points, is awarded when a player shoots the ball through his opponent’s hoop from outside the three-point line.
Basketball rules for high school (NFHS) games are generally identical to those for college (NCAA) games, with a few minor differences. For example, high school players have six fouls before they are disqualified from the game, whereas college players have five fouls. The size of high school courts and hoops is also slightly smaller than those used in college games.
Fouls and Penalties
Fouls and penalties are an important part of basketball. They give players a chance to rest, and they can change the outcome of a game.
A foul is when a player breaks the rules of the game. There are two types of fouls: personal fouls and technical fouls.
A personal foul is when a player hits, pushes or trips another player. This can happen on purpose or by accident. Personal fouls can also happen when a player tries to stop another player from shooting the ball, or when a player commits an illegal move, like holding or elbowing.
Technical fouls are given when a player or coach breaks one of the rules of the game, like arguing with the referee.
Penalties are given when a player or team commits a foul. The most common penalty is free throws. Free throws are given to the other team when certain types of personal fouls are committed. The number of free throws depends on which type of foul it is.
If a technical foul is committed, the other team gets two free throws and the ball back. If a flagrant foul is committed, the other team gets two free throws and the ball back, and the player who committed the foul is ejected from the game.
The Scoring System
In basketball, points are used to keep track of the progress of the game. Every time a team scores, they earn points. The number of points scored depends on how the baskets are made.
If a shot is taken from inside the three-point arc, then it is worth two points. If a shot is taken from outside the three-point arc, then it is worth three points. Free throws are worth one point each.
Points can also be scored by foul shots. Foul shots are taken when a player is fouled while shooting the ball. The player gets to take two shots from the foul line if they are shooting for a two-point basket, or one shot if they are shooting for a three-point basket. If both shots are made, then the team scores the appropriate number of points; if only one shot is made, then only one point is earned.
The scoring system in basketball allows for teams to come back from behind and win the game in the end. This happens often in games where one team is leading by a large margin, but the other team scores more points in the end to win the game.
Basketball Leagues and Tournaments
The top professional basketball league in the United States is the National Basketball Association (NBA). Founded in 1946, the NBA today includes 30 teams, 29 in the United States and one in Canada. The NBA is a member of USA Basketball (USAB), which is recognized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as the national governing body for basketball in the United States.
In addition to the NBA, there are numerous professional basketball leagues around the world, such as the Euroleague and the FIBA World Cup. Many of these leagues and tournaments are organized by FIBA.
The History of Basketball – from Its Origins to The Modern Game
Basketball is a relatively young sport, but it has already had a profound impact on society. It was invented in 1891 by a man named James Naismith, who was looking for a way to keep his students occupied during the cold winters in Massachusetts.
Basketball quickly caught on, and by the early 1900s, it was being played all over the world. The first professional basketball league was founded in 1898, and the first Olympic basketball tournament was held in 1936.
Today, basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is played at both the amateur and professional level, and millions of people watch basketball games every year. The game has also inspired many other sports, such as wheelchair basketball and streetball.

The Greatest Moments in Basketball History – from The Micheal’s Game 6 Game Winner to Kobe’s 81-Point Game
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world. Though it is not as old as some other sports, it has a rich history full of great players, teams, and moments.
Micheal Jordan is considered by many to be the greatest basketball player of all time. He was a 6-time NBA champion, 6-time NBA Finals MVP, and a 14-time NBA All-Star. He was also named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1988.
Jordan’s greatest moments came during his time with the Chicago Bulls. He won six championships with the Bulls, including three straight from 1991 to 1993. His most famous moment came in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz.
With the score tied at 86 and just seconds remaining, Jordan hit a jump shot to give the Bulls a lead they would never relinquish. The shot is considered one of the greatest moments in NBA history.
Jordan also had great rivalries with other players, most notably Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.
Another great moment in basketball history occurred on January 22nd, 2006. On that date, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers scored an incredible 81 points against the Toronto Raptors. This performance remains the second-highest single-game scoring total in NBA history (behind Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game).
Bryant’s 81-point game is considered one of the greatest moments in basketball history for several reasons. First and foremost, it is an incredible individual accomplishment. Secondly, it came against a very good Raptors team. And finally, it helped cement Bryant’s reputation as one of the best players in NBA history.
There have been many other great moments in basketball history since 2006 (including LeBron James’ decision to join the Miami Heat and Durant’s decision to join Golden State), but these two remain perhaps the most iconic and significant.
